JIC FITTINGS

The JIC standard is the industry adaptation of the AN aeronautical standard, created by the United States Army during World War II to standardize equipment for the Air Force and the Navy, hence the " AN ”(Air force - Navy aeronautical standard). SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) is a certification body for the automotive industry.
The JIC / AN standard therefore has its name at SAE: SAEJ514 or SAE37 because of its seat at 37 °. JIC, AN and SAEJ5124 (SAE37) therefore meet the same standards and are compatible with each other. Please note, the SAEJ514 standard is the only SAE standard compatible with the
JIC / AN standard. For example, the standard known as "SAE45" (SAE J512 45 ° Flare) defines a seat at 45 ° and is therefore not JIC / AN compatible, even if the thread is identical. UNF is first and foremost a thread standard, but is sometimes used, through abuse of language,
to define fittings (JIC / ANSAE37 / 45 have UNF thread). However, UNF does not define the seal, and should only be used when talking about a thread without a seat (example: banjo screw).
The "dash": "dash" means "dash" in English. To simplify their designation, the dimensions of JIC / AN fittings are named “dash 2” (-2), “dash 3” (-3), “dash 4” (-4), and so on.
The AN dash increment is 1/16 ° of an inch on the outside diameter of the male thread. Each fitting therefore has an outside diameter that is 1/16 '' (1.588mm) larger than the previous one.
These 3 standards, JIC / AN / SAE37, are the combination of an UNF thread and a 37 ° seat (74 ° in total).

• Thread

Diameter: UNF thread diameter is imperial and expressed in fractions of an inch ('') on the outside diameter of the male part.
Example: dash-3 = JIC3 / 8x24: ø ext. 3/8 '' (= 9.52mm)

Not : The pitch is defined by a number of threads per inch.
Example: Dash-3 = JIC3 / 8x24: pitch of 24 threads per inch, i.e.
24 threads over 25.4mm, i.e. 1 thread every 1.058mm.
Identification: count the number of fillets on 1 inch
(or 25.4mm), or the distance between two threads if the length of the
thread is less than 1 ''.

• Sealing

JIC / AN / SAEJ514 fittings have a 37 ° seat seal (74 ° total). In the vast majority of cases, the male connector has a convex seat and the female connector has a concave seat. However, we can find fittings or reverse seat implantations (the female is convex and the male is concave).

To overcome this eventuality, there are also "double seat" fittings and adapters which ensure the seal regardless of the direction of the seat on the opposite part.
There are also flat seat (or seatless) fittings, which require the use of a gasket. In all cases (inverted seat, double seat or flat seat), the particularity is specified in the reference.
