PRESSURE WASHER

High-pressure cleaners: everything you need to know to make the right choice

High-pressure cleaners are indispensable tools for maintaining farm equipment, buildings and vehicles. Thanks to their cleaning power, they can remove stubborn dirt, mud from tractors, deposits from equipment and even dirt from farm floors.

Origins and development of high-pressure cleaners

The history of high-pressure cleaners dates back to the 1950s. Their creation is often attributed to German engineer Alfred Kärcher, who developed the very first hot-water model for industrial use. Since then, high-pressure cleaners have undergone constant evolution, with the emergence of ever more powerful technologies and models increasingly adapted to the specific needs of professionals and private individuals alike.

The different types of high-pressure cleaners

The use of a high-pressure cleaner in an agricultural environment is essential to maintain your machinery, buildings and equipment. Depending on your needs, there are different types of pressure washer on the market, each with its own specific features and advantages. Here's a detailed overview to help you get to know them better and choose the model best suited to your operation.

✅ Cold water high-pressure cleaners

Cold water cleaners are the most widely used, as they meet the majority of agricultural cleaning needs. Their operation is simple: a pump compresses the water and sprays it at high pressure (generally between 120 and 200 bar), removing the most common dirt.

👉 Technical advantages :
🔧 Economic - These models are more affordable to buy and consume less energy, as they don't incorporate a heating system.
🔧 Light and handy - Thanks to the absence of boilers or burners, their weight is reduced, making them easy to move and use around the farm.
🔧 Quick cleaning - They're ideal for washing trailers, tractors, farm implements and the floors of buildings such as barns and sheds.

👉 Limits :
However, when it comes to removing stubborn grease, oil or sticky deposits (silage grease, hydrocarbon residues...), cold water can show its limitations. That's where hot water models come in.

✅ Hot water high-pressure cleaners

These cleaners are equipped with a heating system (a gas, diesel or oil burner) that raises the temperature of the water, often to 80-90°C, or even 120°C for the most efficient models. This heat makes it much easier to dissolve greasy, sticky soils.

👉 Technical advantages :
🔧 Deep cleaning - The combination of pressure and heat effectively removes grease, oil, fertilizer or feed residues, which is indispensable in agricultural machine shops or for cleaning harvesting equipment.
🔧 Time-saving - The power of hot water significantly reduces cleaning time, an invaluable asset during busy periods.
🔧 Enhanced hygiene - For livestock buildings, hot water makes it easier to disinfect surfaces and reduce health risks for animals.

👉 Limits :
These cleaners require regular maintenance of the burner and extra vigilance when it comes to fuel storage (fuel oil, diesel, etc.). What's more, they are generally more expensive and heavier, which can limit their maneuverability in certain situations.

✅ Thermal or electric cleaners

In addition to their heating mode, high-pressure cleaners are also differentiated by their motorization: electric or internal combustion. Each configuration offers specific advantages and uses in agriculture.

🔌 Electric cleaners

These cleaners are equipped with an electric motor that powers the high-pressure pump. They require an electrical connection (230 V single-phase for domestic models, or 400 V three-phase for the more powerful professional models).

👉 Technical advantages :
🔧 Quiet and clean - They emit no fumes or exhaust gases, making them particularly suitable for enclosed environments (workshops, farm buildings).
🔧 Low maintenance - Fewer moving parts than a combustion engine, so less wear.
🔧 Easy to use - A simple electrical connection is all it takes to put them into operation.

👉 Limits :
They require a nearby power supply. On farms where the work areas are far from the buildings, this can be a constraint.

🛢 Thermal cleaners

These cleaners are powered by a gasoline or diesel engine. They are totally autonomous: no need for an electrical socket! They are ideally suited to farming operations, particularly for work in open fields or for cleaning machinery on plots.

👉 Technical advantages :
🔧 Total autonomy - They work wherever you need them, even in areas without electricity.
🔧 Increased power - Thermal models are generally more powerful, making them ideal for heavy-duty cleaning (heavily soiled tractors, harvesting machines, etc.).
🔧 Robust - These models are often designed for intensive use and stand up well to shocks and harsh conditions.

👉 Limits :
They are heavier, noisier and require regular engine maintenance (engine oil, spark plug, air filter). What's more, the use of fuel means you need to store petrol or diesel safely.

Conclusion: which high-pressure cleaner to choose for agriculture?

✅ For use common and versatile (floor cleaning, tractor washing), models Cold water electric are perfect.
✅ For the workshop degreasing or intensive cleaning mechanical parts, models Hot water are more efficient.
✅ For isolated areas or outdoor cleaning, a cleaner thermal offers total autonomy.

Differences in quality and performance of high-pressure cleaners

When choosing a pressure washer for your farm, it's essential to understand the differences in quality and performance. This will enable you to choose the right model for your needs, guarantee effective cleaning and extend the life of your equipment. Here's a detailed overview:

✅ Pressure and flow

Visit pressure and the water flow are two key elements that determine the cleaning power of a high-pressure cleaner.

🔩 Pressure (bar)
Pressure, measured in bars, determines the force with which water is projected onto the surface to be cleaned.

• For domestic use (cleaning small tools, cars, garden furniture), a pressure of 110 to 130 bar is generally sufficient.

• For use in agricultural or professional, a minimum pressure of 140 to 200 bar is recommended. This effectively removes encrusted mud from tractors, trailers and harvesting equipment.

• The most powerful models can exceed 250 bar, they are mainly used for stripping or cleaning heavily soiled surfaces (public works equipment or silos).

🔩 Water flow (liters/hour)
The flow rate, expressed in liters per hour (l/h), indicates the amount of water projected.

• A high throughput (more than 600-800 l/h for agricultural use) considerably speeds up rinsing and enables faster cleaning of large surfaces.

• Domestic models often have a flow rate of 300 to 400 l/h, which is less suitable for agricultural needs.

• For farming operations, we recommend a flow rate of over 600 l/h, or even 1000 l/h for professional models.

✅ Conclusion for the farmer
👉 Pressure = ability to loosen dirt
👉 Flow = speed and efficiency on large surfaces
👉 It's therefore important to strike a balance between these two values to ensure effective and rapid cleaning of your tractors and buildings.

✅ Design materials

The quality of the materials used has a direct impact on the robustness and durability of the cleaner.

🔩 Aluminum pumps

• Often used in entry-level models.

• Lighter and more economical, but less wear-resistant and corrosion.

• They are suitable for occasional use, but can quickly show signs of weakness in intensive agricultural use (leaks, loss of pressure, etc.).

🔩 Brass or stainless steel pumps

• Present in models professional or agricultural.

• Visit brass is highly resistant to oxidation and high temperatures, making it ideal for heavy-duty pumps.

• L'stainless steel (stainless steel) is even more resistant, especially to chemicals and mineral-laden water (which can be common in some operations).

• These materials guarantee much longer service life and reliability even under tough conditions.

✅ Conseil Camagris pour l'agriculture
👉 For frequent use (washing tractors, trailers, cleaning livestock buildings), invest in a model with a brass or stainless steel pump is highly recommended. This reduces breakdowns and keeps maintenance costs down.

✅ Accessories available to optimize efficiency

Accessories play an essential role in the versatility and efficiency of your pressure washer.

🔧 Rotary nozzles

• Produce a powerful rotating jet of water, ideal for removing thick mud or stubborn crusts of dirt from tractor wheels or tillage implements.

• Their mechanical action reinforces the effect of pressure for impeccable results.

🔧 Telescopic lances

• Ideal for reaching roofs, silo walls or the upper parts of farm buildings.

• They improve safety by eliminating the need for a ladder or stepladder.

🔧 Specific detergents and foamers

• Some cleaners are equipped with tanks for detergent or active foam.

• Degreasing and disinfecting products are particularly useful in livestock buildings (to reduce health risks) or in mechanical workshops.

• Foamers produce a dense foam that adheres better to surfaces, prolonging chemical action and facilitating rinsing.

🔧 Pipe fittings and extensions

• They can be adapted to your farm's configuration and easily reach all areas to be cleaned, even those far from the water source.

✅ Conclusion for farmers
👉 The right accessories will save you time and optimize the efficiency of your cleaner, while enabling you to reach hard-to-reach areas.
