FUEL PUMPS

All you need to know about fuel pumps: a must for farmers and professionals

Fuel pumps are essential equipment for farms, public works companies and mechanical workshops. They make it easy to manage the supply of fuel (diesel, RNG, gasoline) for your tractors, harvesters, site machinery or even utility vehicles. In a context where performance and reliability are essential, it's vital to choose the right system to avoid breakdowns and optimize refuelling.

The different types of fuel pumps on the French market

There are several different types of fuel pumps, depending on their use and context:

✅ Manual fuel pumps

• Simple operation (often lever or bulb).

• Limited flow, generally around 20 to 40 l/min.

• Used for small reservoirs or for troubleshooting.

• Advantage: low cost, no power supply required.

• Disadvantage: physical effort required, not suitable for large volumes.

✅ Portable electric pumps

• Compact, often with low to medium flow rates (up to 50-60 l/min).

• Operates on 12 V/24 V battery or 230 V mains supply.

• Often integrated into portable kits (jerrycan or drum with built-in pump).

• Extremely practical for one-off operations or farms with several refuelling points.

• Limitations: lower throughput than fixed wall stations, durability often inferior to heavier models.

✅ Wall-mounted distribution stations

Visit wall-mounted stations are the most widespread and practical solution for farms or companies with large machine fleets. They generally comprise :

🔩 Electric pump - with rotor or paddle, ensuring continuous, stable flow.
🔩 Flexible distribution hose - often from 4 to 8 m long, to adapt to the configuration of the farm.
🔩 Automatic gun - stops the flow when the reservoir is full, to prevent overflow.
🔩 Volumetric meter (mechanical or digital) - to monitor consumption and inventory management.
🔩 Integrated filtration (optional) - very important to prevent impurities from entering the fuel.

👉 Available flows

• From 40 l/min for small agricultural installations.

• Up to 80-100 l/min for professional stations, adapted to high-capacity agricultural or public works vehicles.

With or without filtration: an essential criterion

Visit filtration is a key element in the longevity of your engines. Fuel pumps are often offered with or without filter:

🔧 No filtration

• More affordable price, ideal if your fuel is already filtered upstream or if quality is guaranteed (e.g. clean, well-maintained tank).

• But no more risk of introducing particles into your machines (rust, dust, water...).

🔧 With filtration

• Integrate a diesel or RNG filter (often 10 to 30 microns).

• Protect your tractors and machines, extending the life of injectors and injection pumps.

• Filtration sometimes separate (diesel filter and water separator) for maximum efficiency.

✅ Consulting for agriculture
👉 Always opt for a station with integrated filtration if you use RNG or long-stored agricultural diesel. Suspended impurities or water condensation can quickly damage modern engines, which are highly sensitive to fuel quality.

Differences in quality and reliability: what really counts

Not all brands are created equal! Here are a few points of comparison:

🔧 Motors and pumps

• Visit entry-level pumps (often aluminum) are less expensive, but have a shorter service life (rapid wear of rotors/palettes).

• Pumps in cast iron or steel are much more robust, better able to withstand the wear and mechanical stresses of high flow rates.

🔧 Pump materials

• Pumps in cast iron or in stainless steel (stainless steel for AdBlue or bioethanol fuel pumps) last much longer and are adapted to difficult farming conditions (dust, temperature variations, humidity).

🔧 Reliable accessories

• Visit mechanical counters are simple and reliable, but less accurate (± 1 to 2%).

• Visit electronic meters are more precise, but more fragile in dusty environments if poorly maintained.

🔧 Hose and gun quality

• A flexible quality (reinforced, UV-resistant) will prevent early cracking and leakage.

• Visit automatic pistols from recognized brands (e.g. Piusi, Tecalemit) guarantee safe filling and constant flow.

Price variations on the market

💶 Manual pumps

• From €50 to €100 for lever-operated models.

• Ideal for drums or small tanks.

💶 Simple wall-mounted stations (without filtration)

• Approximately €300 to €600 for basic electric models (40-60 l/min).

💶 Complete plants with filtration and meter

• Between €700 and €1,500 for professional models (60-100 l/min).

• Top-of-the-range models (large integrated tank, reinforced filtration) can reach over €3,000.

Conclusion: the importance of choosing the right fuel pump

✅ For farmers and professionals, investing in a reliable dispensing station is a must essential to ensure fast, safe refuelling, with no risk of engine contamination.
✅ The wall-mounted stations with filtration and quality accessories are ideal for everyday agricultural use.
✅ By choosing a recognized brand (Piusi, Tecalemit, Adam Pumps...), you benefit from greater durability and simplified maintenance.
